Michael Restivo is a freelance writer, skier, mountaineer, and outdoor enthusiast based in Boulder, Colorado. Raised in Miami, Florida, at 11 years old, his mother took him to see the IMAX film “Everest” and walking out of that theater he knew he wanted to climb. With little more than a backpack, a camera, and a notebook, his travels have taken him from the wilderness of the Himalayas, an ancient church in Italy, the sandstone spires of the Southwestern United States, and the Alaskan backcountry.
While volunteering abroad in Nepal, Michael began to catalogue the everyday sights and sounds of a foreign culture: the bustling sounds of people and motorbikes in Kathmandu, the spicy aromas of saffron and masala at a market in Chitwan, and the color of mustard and crimson on the robes of monks at Tengboche Monastery deep in the Khumbu. Upon returning, a year later he began Mike Off The Map, a site dedicated towards inspiring travel, an active outdoor lifestyle, and experiencing life instead of just living it.
Graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History from Florida International University, Michael worked in Florence, Italy as a guide’s assistant for a university study-abroad program. He is a rock climber, aspiring alpinist, and outdoorsman who will go to any length to fulfill an assignment, record a story, or complete an objective. His role models include writers like Hemingway and Kerouac and the greats of the Golden Age of Exploration such as Shackleton.
From Miami, Michael moved to Seattle Washington, where he worked in a ski shop, and began extensive freelance writing for outdoor industry blogs and publications. Michael then moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he worked for Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides, a local guide company, as well as the Colorado Mountain Club, with a specialty in sales, marketing, and content creation.
Michael currently resides in Boulder, and spends his time backcountry skiing, hiking, mountaineering, and climbing. If you have a project you would like to work on together, please contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org or through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
